Old Timey Egg Cream Soda
Let’s be clear here – this drink has neither egg nor
cream. This blend of milk, chocolate
syrup, and seltzer is a delightful, refreshing dessert beverage reminiscent of
fizzy chocolate milk. It sounds strange,
but trust, it is like a more sophisticated Yoohoo and conjures up fantasies of
sitting in an old timey soda shop, clicking your saddle shoes together, and
sipping through a swirly straw.
Ingredients (serves 1)
3 generous Tbs of Fox’s U-bet Chocolate Syrup
Equal portions of whole milk and seltzer water
The Fox’s brand syrup is really the key component here. Hershey’s has nothing on this stuff. It can be found across NYC in places like
Economy Candy and specialty stores as well as online.
Even a child could attempt this mixology so hang onto your
seats. Add syrup to a tall glass. Fill glass halfway with milk. Top with seltzer (I carbonated my own out of
convenience but this is completely unnecessary). You want to allow an inch of room at the top for
the drink to fizz. Then stir to mix in
the syrup. You’ll want to follow this
order exactly to achieve the rich foamy head on top.
I served mine in a moustache glass but a regular glass will
do just fine.
